L'Institut de Formation et de Recherche pour les Artisanats des Métaux (IFRAM)

Located near Rouen, the « Institut de Recherche et de Formation pour les Artisanats des Métaux » has been created because of the need to unite professionals coming from a fragmented sector with a wide variety of know-how.

Created in 2001, IFRAM aims at promoting traditional metalwork jobs and more particularly arts and crafts jobs (ironworks, locksmith’s trade, cutlery works, blacksmith’s trade, copperware trade, toolmaking, art foundry…), and tries to respond efficiently to the metalworkers concerns. It has been labeled “National Innovation hub” in 2003.

This official recognition enabled IFRAM to intensify its actions towards metalworking businesses. In front of the planned disappearance of their know-how, IFRAM tries to unite metalworking artisans around a common project, in order to help them get out of their isolation and inform the authorities about their situation.

Participation in the "New Deal for Innovation" project

The actions carried out by IFRAM as an “Innovation hub”, are :

  • the development of tools for knowledge and techniques dissemination (technical meetings, lifelong learning, quarterly magazine, website and monthly newsletter, events…)
  • advice and support for businesses
  • and most of all innovation, and the research of suitable solutions for craft businesses.

IFRAM wants to develop this last action by getting involved in the NDI project, in order to think about new tools to help very small businesses in their innovation processes.
